(in line : ~와 일직선을 이루는)

어떻게 이런 개소리의미가 성립하게 된걸까?



'a-' 는 여기에서 '나란히'라는 뜻으로 사용되었다.

'on, in, into'라는 뜻으로서 'alive, above, asleep, aback, abroad' 등이 사용되기도 하고

'off, from'의 의미로서 'anew, afresh, akin, abreast'와 같이 쓰이기도 한다.

여기에선 이 두번째 의미로 쓰인 것이다.



'breast'의 사전상 1번 의미는 여성의 유방(...)이다. 당장 구글링만 해봐도 알 수 있다.

게르만 초기 언어로서 brust/breust 등으로 쓰인 이 단어의 문자 그대로 뜻은

다름아닌 'swelling'이다.

그 뿌리격인 bhreus는 'to swell, sprout'라는 의미로, 말 그대로

씨앗이 발아하여 부풀어오르는 형상(...)을 일컫는다.



이런 'breast'의 동사형 의미는 '(꼭대기에) 오르다, 가슴으로 밀다좋다'이다.

근데 예문을 자세히 들여다보면 왜 이런 의미인지 알 수 있다.

'As they breasted the ridge, they saw the valley and lake before them.'
(그들이 산마루에 오르니 눈앞에 계곡과 호수가 보였다)

'He strode into the ocean, breasting the waves'
(그는 가슴으로 파도를 가르며 바다 속으로 성큼성큼 걸어 들어갔다)

1590년대에 사용된 의미는 'to push the breast against'로, 여전히 가슴이라는 말은 맞다.
(가까이 맞닿게 하여 가슴으로 미는 것)

그런데 1850년대에 이 표현이 진화하면서 비유적인 표현으로

'meet boldly or openly'이라고 쓰였다.
(대담/뻔뻔하고 공개적이게 만남을 가진다)

이런 사용법은 'breasting the waves'같은 표현에 적합하다.

또한, 'sprout'의 의미로, 점점 높게 꼭대기 정상을 향해 나아가고 있는 것도 의미한다.



이렇게 해서 '자라나고 있는 새싹처럼 점점 부풀어오르고 있는 가슴 상승하고 있는 기세를

나란하게 따라가고 있는 것을 일컬어 'abreast'라고 한다.
